Natural Branch Wood Cribbage Boards

Inspired by the forests and ocean that surround us, our large tabletop Branch Wood and Driftwood Cribbage Boards are as unique and beautiful as the trees they come from and the ocean forces that shape them.

Hearkening back to maker Geoff's roots in the fine arts, each board is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Geoff forages for these pieces in the back woods of our forest or on his travels, looking for pieces with a cribbage story to tell. He brings them back to the workshop, dries and cures them for months and sometimes years, then sees what it wants to be by carving, cutting, drilling, sanding, finishing, and detailing it.

We spend time in the workshop on each board to uncover its natural features and develop its hidden talents. When playing on the boards, we love the curving, natural journey your pegs take, sometimes jumping over obstacles, climbing hills, or following steep descents. These topographic features make the journey special and natural, like a Sunday stroll.

These boards are sculptural display pieces. Most boards have a little extra height with joined foraged branch legs. We've found that playing the game by tossing the cards underneath the natural bridge made by the curve in the branches is a delightful part of the game.

Although each board is unique, what every board has in common:
- signed and dated by the artist (Geoff)
- the play surface is sanded and finished with a hardwearing clear satin gloss
- the bark and/or organic character of the piece is left as intact as possible

Read the description and photos of each board listing carefully, because each one contains unique features. Some have peg storage, different kinds or sizes of pegs, some have 3 or even 4 tracks, some have legs with nonskid feet, wall hooks, and even more features. Whenever possible, we link each board to an online photo gallery showing more pictures of the board: click the link to see more photos of the board.

Because each board is one-of-a-kind, there is only a quantity of one for each board. When it's sold, it's gone forever.

Currently on offer:
This show-stopper is made from wild-crafted deadfall madrone wood foraged on a trip to Northern California. The bark is gorgeous, almost reminiscent of eucalyptus, and the wood grain is unstoppably beautifulwith oval tree rings visible. The madrone wood is dense and heavy, and both it and the extra-large specialty metal pegs exude gravitas. It has all our favorite design features, including a bridge and a roller-coaster playing course. We pulled out all the bells and whistles for this board: a looped 2-person 120-point track and peg storage with a cork closure and brass and black hexagonal pegs. We freehand woodburned the point sections, peg holes, and a skunk line.  More photos here.

The exquisitely arched shape of the wood dictated the surface of the board, making nice smooth curves in play and earning this board the nickname “Merlin” like a wizard's staff. It features a 3-player,single-track, 60-point course and freehand woodburned point holes. Standard size pegs in black, stainless steel, and copper are stored in a hidden compartment on the underside of the board, secured with a cork.  More photos here.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece of driftwood, alright! At first I envisioned this like a pirate ship, and then it anthropomorphized into an animal. It certainly has a life of its own and will make an excellenttabletop or mantle display and conversation piece. It features a 2-player, single-track, 120-point course with freehand woodburned peg holes and point sections. Pegs are standard size black and stainless steel and stored in a hidden compartment on the underside of the board, secured with a cork.  More photos here.
Measures:25” (63.5 cm) x 6.5” (16.5 cm) x 8.5” (21.6 cm) $235

The grain of this wood looks like frozen flickers of firelight, which is why I've nicknamed this piece, “The Dragon”. As soon as I started making it, I couldn't stop. I was possessed. This board inspired meto create hanging wall hooks as a new feature, it's that beautiful. It's the perfect shape and height with hidden peg storage and a wall hook for hanging when not in use. It features a 3-player, single track 120-point course with freehand woodburned peg holes and standard size pegs in black, stainless steel, and copper.  More photos here.
