Hearkening back to maker Geoff's roots in the fine arts, each driftwood piece is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Geoff forages for characterful pieces on North Oregon Coast beaches, looking for pieces with a story to tell.
At the workshop, he evaluates each piece individually.He brings them back to the workshop, dries and cures them for months and sometimes years, then sees what it wants to be: by carving, cutting, drilling, sanding, finishing, and detailing it. Then he outfits it for hanging with the appropriate hardware, including leg mounts to stand off the wall when needed.
With a custom commission, we aim to create a piece that fits your artistic goals, while working within the natural material's scarcity, limitations, and surprises. Depending on your budget and goals, we can have a light touch on a characterful piece, or invest time in multi-media craftsmanship to tell a transformative story.
Sometimes a piece is no naturally beautiful it only requires careful cutting and mounting. But by revealing what's underneath, sanding away the surface to take a look at the wood grain, we discover what the uniformly weathered gray driftwood exterior surface is hiding. It could reveal a complex wood grain, light or dark colors, sometimes a wood that came from just upriver, and sometimes a wood that might have crossed the ocean. Sanded areas are given a clear satin gloss to enhance the juxtaposition of surfaces.
These boards are sculptural display pieces with hanging hardware and an (optional) wood display placard with artist statement. The artist statement is written collaboratively by Geoff and his wife Valerie.
