The mystery behind u-lock sizes

We get a lot of questions about u-lock dimensions, because our current rack-mounted and frame-mounted u-lock holster designs only accommodate one size of lock. To add to the confusion, u-lock companies give the measurements of their u-locks based on the size of the hole in the middle of the lock, not the outside dimensions, which makes it even more confusing for measuring whether your lock will fit in our holster. So now you know why we say our holsters are designed for a 5.5" x 7.25" lock or the Kryptonite Mini-Evo 5, yet Kryptonite's site gives the dimensions of the Kryptonite Mini-Evo 5 as 3.25" x 5.5" (screen shot below). The Mini-Evo 5 is 5.5" x 7.25" on the outside dimensions and has a hole in the middle 3.25" x 5.5". Kryptonite Mini Evo 5 - 3x5 or 5x7? Kryptonite Mini Evo 5 - 3x5 or 5x7? The dimensions of the hole inside the u-lock are, of course, great when you're trying to figure out how much room you'll have to lock up your bike. But not so great when you're trying to figure out where and how to store it. Walnut Studiolo's frame mounted u-lock holster Walnut Studiolo's frame mounted u-lock holster

I love the holder, but It makes me worried that’s just another thing someone could steal off my bike.
